BOK’s Top 10: Week 3

The Sooners put the nation on notice in a convincing win over Michigan, led by transfer QB John Mateer. Photo: SEC Network

  1. Ohio State, 2-0

Rolling right along with a 70-0 shutout win over Grambling as the Buckeyes improve to 2-0. They should stand as the clear #1 in the eyes of the nation. Julian Sayin had a near perfect game with his only incompletion coming on an INT. They should steamroll in-state foe Ohio this week before Big 10 conference play begins.

  2. Miami, 2-0

The 'Canes dispatched Bethune-Cookman 45-3 as Carson Beck went 22/24 with a couple TD passes. Suddenly hot South Florida comes to…south Florida in another good test for Mario Cristobal’s squad.

  3. Oregon, 2-0

Don’t piss off Dan Lanning. That should be a lesson to Mike Gundy and all the other coaches on Oregon’s schedule this season to keep quiet before facing his Ducks. They annihilated the Oklahoma State Cowboys 69-3 in the worst loss in over 100 years for OK State. Brutal.

  4. LSU, 2-0

Was it a bit of a sleep walk performance, or indicative of a larger issue? The Tigers beat Louisiana Tech 23-7, and their road win over Clemson lost some shine as those Tigers failed to eclipse 3 points over Troy until the 2nd half. At least this week’s opponent looks a lot more manageable than it had been. Death Valley will be rocking once again Saturday night.

  5. Penn State, 2-0

Another team that was slow to put away a weak opponent, the Nittany Lions defeated FIU 34-0 in a game that was only 13-0 until late in the 2nd half. Many polls have them as the nation’s #2 team, but I’m not buying it just yet based on what we’ve seen thus far.

  6. Texas, 1-1

The Longhorns took care of business against outmatched San José State, 38-7. They’ll have similar tests in each of the next two weeks at home and will look to improve the offensive output that has looked suspect through two games.

  7. Florida State, 2-0

77!! Sheeeesh. Not taking any prisoners, the Seminoles rolled up 729 yards on poor old East Texas A&M in the 77-3 rout. This only continues their momentum from the thrashing of Alabama. Suddenly a clear top 2 team in the state of Florida and a challenger (maybe even frontrunner?) to Miami and Clemson in the ACC.

  8. Georgia, 2-0

Georgia was the latest less-than-inspiring team as they defeated Austin Peay 28-6 in a game they were 46 point favorites in. The game featured a lengthy rain delay, but concerns over the offense are starting to pop up. Not what you want ahead of a big trip to Knoxville for this week’s College GameDay site.

    Next: vs. East Texas A&M

  9. Iowa State, 3-0

The Cyclones continue their winning ways after the anticipated slugfest with Iowa, prevailing 16-13 in Ames. Now standing as the Big 12 favorite, it’s a group that resembles Matt Campbell teams of the past that have gone on to play for a conference title.

    Next: @ Arkansas State

  10. Oklahoma, 2-0

The biggest risers this week, having won last week’s biggest matchup in a 24-13 win over Michigan in a game that wasn’t that close. John Mateer is a do everything guy for their offense and delivered moments of magic, making an early (EARLY) Heisman push. You have to wonder though if the load on him is sustainable, after 19 carries against the Wolverines. OU’s 8 conference opponents are all ranked in the AP top 25 this week.

    Next: @ Temple

  11. Notre Dame, 0-1

The team landing just outside this week’s top 10 is the Fighting Irish, having been off this week ahead of the matchup with Texas A&M. I suspect they will have shored up the lines of scrimmage since the loss to Miami and should make life difficult for the Aggies in South Bend on Saturday night.
